Upland Gamebirds, Waterfowl & Turkeys
Trent Barnes from Nevada
Aly Sheneberger from Washington
Vaughndavid Stosich from Idaho
Here is some great bird work that Vaughndavid put together while he was here at Artistic School of Taxidermy. Vaughndavid found out just how important it is to do a good good job repairing holes and how much sewing you have to do before and after you put it together. Had a great time teaching you the art and thanks for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy!
Ethan Beutler from IdahoHey Everyone, here is Ethan with a couple of nice birds he did on his Spring Break. His Father came along as a non-instructional student. Ethan did a fantastic job on his piece! Ethan, it was a pleasure to teach you and thanks again for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy for your learning needs!

Russ Olin from Colorado
Over the past week and a half I had the opportunity to instruct Russ, yes both of my students were named Russ...in the art of bird taxidermy. They both quickly acquired nick names to help with the instructional process. Holy Oly like Rip, had a bit of a rough start or should I say hole "ie" start, but in the end, Oly persevered(stitched and stitched and stitched ;D) and did a fantastic job on all of his pieces! I again thank you for doing your research and choosing ASOT for your learning needs. Thanks Russ, it was a pleasure to teach you and I'd be honored to have you back!
"I was as green as they come when it came to taxidermy, so I did my research on taxidermy schools and decided that ASOT was the right fit for me. I emailed and talked with Troy on several occasions before booking a 10 day bird course for late February 2017. Troy picked me up from the airport and on the way to his house (which was as good or better than everyone said it was.). I told him "I wasn't an artsy fartsy kind of person". He said he had something for me the next morning. That next morning I showed him how non artsy fartsy and non-detail oriented I really was. Troy wasn't deterred and has the patience of a saint. There was another student there learning birds who was also named Russ. It didn't take long and we didn't make it hard for Troy to tell us apart. When it came to the flesher I put holes everywhere and Russ ripped things, so I became "Holie Oly" and he was "Rippin Russ". Troy stuck with me through 10 days, most of which were 10-12 hours in the shop. Troy gave me the tools and confidence needed to make an artistic mount, not just how to do bird taxidermy.
Looking Forward to Coming Back for Further Training

Russ Harris from California
Just spent 10 days teaching Rippin Russ on the finer details in the art of bird taxidermy. Russ got off to a slow
or should I say "Rippin" start, but in the end, he put it all together and his results speak volumes!!! Russ, you were a pleasure to teach and thanks again for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy for your learning needs. Looking forward to having you back!
"hello everyone, this is Russ Harris (now known as Rippin Russ after quality time spent on Troys Flesher!) after recently selling my business I decided to try something I thought I could love and maybe make a buck doing it. With a serious passion for waterfowl hunting I decided to give bird taxidermy a try. From online research and a short conversation with Troy on the phone, I knew ASOT was the school to try. after really struggling the first two days, I had my doubts about loving this NOT. thanks to Troy I learned I had patience and possibly I could do this. He lets you work at your own pace with no pressure but still teaches a great attention to detail with no shortcuts. The atmosphere, meals, accommodations and above all the instruction is all first class! After just nine days I returned home with the knowledge of a trade I love and can make a buck. Thanks Troy keep up the good work. And I can't forget a thanks to Oly my partner in crime and fellow student, you need to trade that badge in for a scalpel full time! Keep that flesher warm Troy ill be back!!"

Matt Dockstader from California
teaching Matt, a return student from California in the aspects of Turkeys. Matt did a great job on a half strut bird.As I have said before, there are many schools out there for individuals to choose from. Matt, as always it was a pleasure to teach you and to have you back, thanks again for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy for your learning needs!
Dewight Batt from Colorado
Hello everyone, Dewight came from Colorado to learn beards and the finer aspects of sewing but as you can see, Dewight did a great job! Remember, reguardless of age, "You are never too old to pursue a passion!" Thanks for choosing ASOT!
Robert Watson from Texas
Hello everyone! Just finished up 7 great days with Rob out of Texas. Rob came to learn birds and and as you can see he did a great job! Rob also learned that the fleshing wheel can make for some tedious sewing. With all that aside, Rob, it was a pleasure to teach you my friend and thanks for choosing ASOT!
Jeff Schneider from North Dakota
I had the pleasure of instructing a return student Jeff on the finer techniques of mounting a good bird. Jeff traveled from North Dakota and put in 6 long days of training. Jeff burnt the midnight oil on several occasions. As you can see it paid off. His results were nothing shy of fantastic! Jeff, I enjoyed teaching you the art, and thanks again for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy for your learning needs!
"I recently spent another week with Troy at Artistic School of Taxidermy. This time I concentrated solely on birds and I must say, once again I learned a wealth of information. I have been making bird mounting much more difficult than it needs to be. Troy is a master at his craft and has an uncanny ability to teach the art of taxidermy. Bird mounts used to frustrate me to no end. Not any more! I feel I learned what it takes to put together a very good bird mount. Once again Troy was a gracious host, with outstanding accommodations and meals. As stated in my post last Summer, there is no better place to learn taxidermy than with Troy at Artistic School of Taxidermy. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned taxidermist looking for some fresh ideas and methods, look no further. Your search is over! Contact Troy and book your training. You will not regret it"

Preston Evens from Boise Idaho
Had a return student from 15 years ago come for a refresher on waterfowl. Preston came to me way back when and learned gameheads, medium lifesize and upland game birds. Preston has won numerous "Best of Categories" at various State Competitions since his original schooling. Preston came to learn new techniques to help speed up his time on his customers work which translates to more profit per piece! Preston, job well done! It was great having you back!!!
"i am a former student of Troys from 15yrs ago. I have been so impressed with his student's work and the comments from them that i had to return for a refresher class to see his new home and studio for myself..All i can say is WOW! and i wish i had returned sooner.his accommodations and his shop are top shelf.i must have gained 10lbs in 2 days. The environment and surroundings are like no other schools around.Troy had one other student there at the time (Jay) who was a returning student and i can tell he will be a great taxidermist in his own right from the training Troy has provided.Troy showed me better.easier and more efficient ways to mount my birds than i was doing.i know it was money well spent and that i wont wait so long to make it back.you will learn from Troy whether you are a beginner or a seasoned taxidermist. Thanks again Troy!"

Marie Neumiller from Mead Washington
Spent 3 great days with Marie from Washington doing birds. Marie, you were a pleasure to instruct and you did some great pieces! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to instruct you in the Art!
My name is Marie Neumiller and I just recently completed three days working at the Artistic School of Taxidermy. While there I completed a flying drake mallard and a standing pheasant.
Arriving at the Artistic School of Taxidermy is almost like arriving at a second home. The location is beautiful, the people are friendly and very easy to get along with and the food is great! It is a very comfortable atmosphere which makes it easy to get right to work.
The training at the Artistic School of Taxidermy is even better than the accommodations. You'll receive one on one, hands on training with a world class taxidermist. The lessons are geared to each student so whether you are working on your first piece or your hundredth piece there is quite a bit that you can learn. Troy offers the flexibility to work at your own pace, and is very patient even through the most basic steps. I had worked on four birds prior to arriving and they just weren't working out, I was almost ready to give up because it seemed to complicated. Troy has a no nonsense approach that made both bird mounts unbelievably simple. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly they came together and I learned techniques that will help me as I continue working with birds and future taxidermy projects. You get to plan out your pieces ahead of time, that way when you arrive everything is ready and waiting. You don't have to worry about purchasing supplies or tools as they are all here waiting and the shop is available to you while you are here. This gives beginners like me the opportunity to try out tools and techniques before making an investment.
I highly recommend the Artistic School of Taxidermy whether you are just starting out or feeling like you are in a bit of a rut. Either way you will learn and your projects will improve greatly.

Joseph Maybon from Twin Falls Idaho
It was a pleasure to have Joseph back for a couple of days to instruct him on some flying waterfowl. Great job Joseph and thanks for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy for your continued learning experience!
Tim Adams from Port Angeles Oregon
Spent 5 long days with Tim from Western Washington doing waterfowl. Tim, had a great time teaching you! You stuck with it and produced some nice pieces! I hope everything made it back in one piecel. Thanks for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy for your learning needs!
Jon Feller from Riverton Wyoming
Just finished up a fun week with Jon from Wyoming. Jon came to learn birds and rugs. As you can see, Jon did a couple of really nice birds (not painted) and he did a nice coyote which I will post when we get it back from the felter. Jon, you were a pleasure teach and your pieces came out GREAT! Safe travels home and thanks again for choosing Artisitc School of Taxidermy!
Don Wagner from Portland, Oregon...
Spent 3 great days instructing Don from Portland Oregon on waterfowl. I really wished we would have had another day to do the finish work as his mounts came out awesome even without them being painted. Don, you were a pleasure to instruct an I enjoyed your company. Thanks for choosing Artistic School of Taxidermy! Keep up the great work!
I spent 3 days with Troy recently, being taught waterfowl taxidermy. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about my experience there! Troy worked his butt off to help me learn what I went there for... and believe me, he had his work cut out for him with me! My only regret was that I didn't take any notes. There was so much information being given to me that I couldn't possibly retain all of it in the short time that I was there. The food and accommodations were top notch! If anyone reading this is thinking about this type of training, I HIGHLY recommend Artistic School of Taxidermy You will NOT be disappointed! Thanks Troy for the great experience...I learned a lot!"
Cheers my friend, Don

Kurt Kamholz from Douglas, Wyoming...
Spent 5 great days with Kurt from Wyoming teaching him the art of bird taxidermy. Kurt found out in a hurry that they are not as easy as they look, but he stuck it out and produced some stellar pieces. The pheasant and hun were lacking paint.
Good Job Kurt!

Ryan towle From boise, idaho...
Once again, another great student emerges from training. After 6 great days, Ryan from Idaho put together some stellar pieces. Folks I can't thank you enough for the great quality of students I have had the pleasure to teach. Ryan, you made my job too easy! I had a blast teaching you. Looking forward to your return. Keep in touch my friend.
"I met Troy briefly a couple years ago through his taxidermy on waterfowl. At that point during our discussion he told me that he also taught students. I was always interested and because of Troys work I had seen, I wanted to learn from him. I wrote down his website and kept reviewing it and researching schools after quite some time I called Troy to book a full week on waterfowl. This is not an ordinary class room setting. You are welcomed into his home atop of a hill side. You are working in his shop which is attached to his house. I brought my own birds to mount with me. When presenting the birds he asked me what positions and style of mounts I wanted to do. There is no set strict lessons like many other "schools" have. With Troy I was able to pick my own birds and learn what I wanted to and what most interested me. Where else can you pick what you learn? This is truly an experience that is a must and should be done by all beginners and even those already doing taxidermy. He answers all your questions, explains the reasons of how and why, and you do the work. When you see how much time he spends with you; you will begin to wonder how you could learn all this at another "school" with several students. You get personal attention to what you do, the detail, and most importantly the correct way. Troy's place is more than three hots and a cot. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided and generous portions to make sure you do not go hungry. You're room is very comfy, private bathroom, and TV with satelite. I spent additional time in the shop, and with the views in his open style home with windows viewing the hillsides I spent the time watching whitetail deer, turkeys, and elk walk around the house and on the hillside; so no time for TV. Each morning coffee was brewing and I had a cup of joe, with the morning sunrise to get the day started. After experiencing this first week, I can't believe that I put off learning for so long. I learned so much that in addition to that first week of waterfowl, I have already had two additional classes, I spent 3 days on habitat - this is one of the best things to learn and I recommend to add an additional couple days to cover it as I found out it can be an expensive learning if you do not understand and know what you are doing. Take the extra time, after learning habitat you will understand how to do it right and how much money you will save. The third class I did was on a 3/4 strut turkey. Also, I have additional classes scheduled to learn big game heads. This has been the greatest learning experiences I have had in my life time. Don't take my word for it, shop around, look at other schools, how many students you'll be with, look at the instructors work, and even more importantly look at the students work. You will see that all the students have the same poses on their mounts and they are not up to par of a great mount. There is only one place you learn what you want to learn, how to do it right, how to produce true quality, and this is it!" Ryan

Dave did a 10 day bird course and banged out some great looking pieces. Great job Dave, looking forward to your return to do game heads!

John from Grangeville, Idaho completed a two day bird class with me and folks let me tell ya, I hope he does not continue to do birds because I won't have any customers...John nailed this Harlequin!!!
Kirk Marston from Emmett, Idaho
Kirk came up and did a two day advanced bird mounting techniques course. Kirk was a student of mine many years ago and did the full course I have to offer. He did a great bird back then, but wanted to get some advanced lessons on birds. Kirk brought a pair of Snows to do...ya, those dang white things. Kirk you did a fantastic job! Glad to see you still got it!!! Your snows came out awesome and so did the base...nice "T" shirt btw...haha !!!
"I went through training for birds, lifesize, and gameheads with Troy and it is the best money I have ever spent. His skills and attention to detail is second to none. Once you go through his course your quality is sure to improve immensely. If you have any questions after your training he will answer them for you if you give him a call. I would recommend his hands on training to anyone whether you are a beginner or you want to take your work to a higher level should take some training from Troy."

Tyson from Saskatchewan, Canada...
Tyson came back for round two and trained for another 5 days. Tyson returned to learn advanced bird techniques, and wow did he ever. The pair of Old Squaws were stunners (unfortunately we were not able to do finish work as the birds were not dry). Tyson also did a beautiful Blue Ross and a nice Woody Great job Tyson! It was great having you back!!!
Tyson from Canada
And just when I thought It couldn't get any better...Tyson from North of the Border busted out some great pieces during a 5 day training session... Again, the pictures don't do justice for the great mounts Tyson put together. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures when you get them all complete!!! Tyson, I enjoyed your determination to succeed. Way to go!!!
"I spent 5 days learning birds with Troy and it was an absolute blast. I started as an absolute beginner and now have the confidence and knowledge of how to put a bird together properly and the tricks to make it look good. I struggled at the start but Troy stuck through it with me and let me learn things the hard way at times so that I understood what I was doing. He supervised me along the way and made sure that I was staying on track and showing me the way things were supposed to be done. His place is 5 stars for sure, from the location to the food to the shop, its breathtaking. From being able to work throughout the day while turkeys, deer and quail were just yards away out the window, to the delicious meals that are prepared for each meal. His house has breathtaking views outside and is a palace inside. Troy showed great patience and a true passion of taxidermy, he shows you what it takes to be great and inspires you to do the same. He works hard so that you succeed and makes you feel right at home. I hope that others can experience what I have as just staying at his house was an experience that I will never forget, and now I have the skills and knowledge that I can feel confident in putting out quality work of my own. Thanks again Troy for teaching me and showing me what taxidermy is really about." Tyson

"Troy:
Thanks for the excellent instruction I received and the wonderful hospitality. I highly recommend Troy to anyone that is interested in learning taxidermy the right way. I have a new outlook on Bird Taxidermy after spending 5 days with Troy. He truly is an Artist. If you are looking for some excellent one on one training, beautiful surroundings and excellent food (lots of it), do yourself a favor and learn from a master.
This was an excellent investment of my time and money.
Once again, Big thanks. I will be back!!!
